Pakistan and India have fought three wars since independence from the British in 1947. Two of them were for control of Kashmir.
According to analysts, the disputed territory of Kashmir is the biggest obstacle to normalization of relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
It is also worth mentioning here that in the 1971 war, the Pakistani submarine PNS Hangur destroyed the Indian Navy's warship INS Khukri, led by Commodore Tasnim.
It is the only warship ever destroyed by India during the wars, and was the first to be destroyed by a submarine since World War II.
