The International Cricket Council (ICC) has named Shaheen Shah Afridi, a young member of the Pakistani cricket team and fast bowler, as the best cricketer of the year.

Earlier on Monday, Pakistan captain Babar Azam was selected as the best ODI cricketer of the year.

This is the first time since the launch of the ICC Awards in 2004 that a Pakistani cricketer has been named the best cricketer or the best ODI cricketer overall.

For the Gary Sobers Trophy for Best Player, Shaheen Afridi competed against Test cricketer of the year English captain Joe Root, Pakistan's T20 Player of the Year Mohammad Rizwan and New Zealand captain Ken Williamson.

Shaheen Afridi was earlier included in the ICC's Best Test and T20 teams of 2021.

After the selection of Shaheen Afridi, the number of Pakistani players who have won ICC awards in 2021 has increased to four.

Before Shaheen Afridi and Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan was named the best player of the year for the T20 format while Pakistan women's cricket team fast bowler Fatima Sana was named the best emerging player of the year.

Babar Azam was earlier included in the ICC's 2021 Best T20 and ODI team and was also given the captaincy of both the teams.

Babar Azam competed for the ODI Cricketer of the Year award against South Africa's Janiman Malan, Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan and Ireland's Paul Sterling.

Although Babar Azam played only six ODIs in 2021, his performance in those matches was impressive and he scored 405 runs at an average of 67.50 including two centuries.
