Leading Indian singer Krishna Kumar Kanth (KK) who sang many popular songs for Bollywood films in the last three decades has died in Calcutta at the age of 53.

He was invited to a college function in Calcutta and even during this live performance he complained of ill health.

Returning from the same live performance on Tuesday evening, he was taken to a private hospital where three doctors confirmed his death. ''His body has been sent for autopsy''.

Minister of State Arup Biswas, who was rushed to the hospital, confirmed KK's death while talking to media.

He told reporters outside the hospital that "the initial estimate of the doctors is that K has died of a heart attack."

However, ''the body has been sent for autopsy to find out the real cause of death.''

He said, ''I found out about it when I got home from the office and KK was reportedly brought to the hospital dead.''

KK has made his voice heard in films in many languages, including Tamil, Telugu, Canadian, Malayalam, Marathi, Bengali, Hindi and Gujarati.

He had come for a live performance at Gorodas College in Calcutta, but it was during this performance that he suddenly became unwell and returned to the hotel.

When his fans outside the hotel wanted to take a picture with him, they stopped him due to ill health.

As his condition worsened, he was taken to a private hospital, where doctors confirmed that he had died before reaching there.

KK has sung for a number of Bollywood films including 'Tad Tad Ke Is Dil Se', 'Ankhon Mein Teri', 'Kya Mein Pyaar Hai' and many other popular songs.

She started her Bollywood career as a playback singer in 'Hum Dil De Chake Sanam'. Amit Kumar, the son of popular KK singer and composer Kishore Kumar, was a close friend.

Amit's wife Reema Ganguly announced KK's death in a Facebook post. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent a condolence tweet expressing grief over KK's death.

He wrote in a tweet that he is saddened by the sudden death of singer Krishna Kumar Kanth. His songs reflected emotions in different ways and his songs touched people of all ages.

"They will be remembered through their songs."

Fans continue to share condolence messages on social media around the world, including Bollywood, on his death.

In Pakistan, as in India, KK's death is a hot topic on social media and #RIPKK is a top trend.

His fans are not only sharing his famous songs but also talking about KK's life and career and paying tribute to him.

"I can't believe this news," wrote Indian singer Shriya Goshal. It is very difficult to accept this fact, my heart has been torn to pieces.
