Ten wickets in the innings: Ijaz Patel's name will now be written along with Jim Laker and Anil Kumble
New Zealand left-arm sniper Ijaz Patel's first day of the Mumbai Test against India, when captain Virat Kohli LBW on the fourth ball to zero LBW was considered his great success.
But who knew that on the second day of the match, the same Ejaz Patel would add his name to a unique feat in the history of cricket and also in the city where he was born.
When India's first innings ended at 325 on the second day of the Mumbai Test, Ijaz Patel's name was listed ahead of all the ten wickets he got.
He thus became the third bowler in the world to take all ten wickets in an innings of a Test match.
Earlier, England's off-spinner Jim Laker and India's league sniper Anil Kumble have done this feat. However, this performance of Ijaz Patel is also important as he is the first player to do this feat outside his country.
Ejaz Patel has taken these 10 wickets for 119 runs in 45.05 overs. Obviously, this performance has also become a new record for the best performance of any New Zealand bowler. Earlier, Sir Richard Headley had taken 9 wickets for 52 runs in an innings of the Brisbane Test against Australia in November 1985.
Who is Ejaz Patel?
Ejaz Patel's full name is Ejaz Younis Patel.''He was born on October 21, 1988 in Mumbai. In 1996, his family settled in New Zealand''.
Ejaz Patel used to bowl fast but later he adopted spin bowling.''His coach is Deepak Patel, who made a name for himself by bowling for New Zealand in the 1992 World Cup''. Like his coach, Ijaz Patel started bowling in his first Twenty20 International against Pakistan in October 2018 at the age of 30 and soon after that he played his first Test against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.
Ejaz Patel's debut in Test cricket was memorable.''In his first innings, he took the wickets of Pakistan captain Sarfraz Ahmed and Bilal Asif. His impressive performance of 5 for 59 in the second innings helped New Zealand to a dramatic 4-run victory''.
He came into international cricket six years after playing first-class cricket.
Jim Laker and Anil Kumble are more famous
Before Ijaz Patel, the two bowlers who have taken ten wickets in an innings of Tests have been more famous than them.
England off-spinner Jim Laker performed this feat in July 1956 against Australia at Old Trafford. He took 9 wickets for 37 runs in Australia's first innings and then bowled out all 10 Australian batsmen for 53 runs in the second innings. Thus, he had taken 19 wickets for 90 runs in this Test match.
The only wicket that was out of Jim Laker's reach in this match was that of Jim Burke who was dismissed by Tony Lock.
Indian League sniper Anil Kumble took ten wickets in the innings in the February 1999 Test against Pakistan in Delhi.
Anil Kumble had bowled four wickets in Pakistan's first innings in this match. In the second innings, he went on to take one wicket after another and ended the innings at 10 for 74. However, some decisions of Indian umpire J. Prakash in this innings were also criticized. Kumble took all his ten wickets while bowling from Prakash K's end.
