Human Rights Council agrees to appoint investigator for Afghanistan, Pakistan opposes
Geneva: The UN Human Rights Council has agreed to appoint an investigator on Afghanistan, with China and Russia opposing it.
According to the foreign news agency, the resolution to appoint an investigator by the European Union was passed in the council on Thursday, after which the investigator will start work in March, with the help of UN experts.
The European Union says the passage of the resolution is a clear signal that the international community will stand with the Afghan people.
The news agency says the investigation will investigate alleged violations by the Taliban and other parties there.
According to the news agency, 28 countries supported the resolution and 5 countries opposed it while 14 countries were absent.
Opponents of the resolution include China, Pakistan and Russia.
Pakistan's ambassador Khalil Hashmi said in a statement that he could not support the establishment of an unnecessary special envoy.
In addition, Chinese diplomat Jiang Duan said there were serious flaws in the EU resolution.
He said the United States had been responsible for human rights abuses in Afghanistan for two decades.
